EVALUATING WEBSITES PROJECT:
This web quest is a modification of a web quest created by Kellie Gibson: Original Webquest
INTRODUCTION:
"Evaluating Web Sites" was created to help students develop skills for evaluating information on the internet. It is necessary for students to have the ability to evaluate information from the internet. There is so much information on the World Wide Web and so many different web sites that students need to develop skills to distinguish between reliable rescources and unreliable rescources. The students will learn about the authneticity, authorship, and usability of internet sources. The students will be given an assignment to write a paper explaining some of the ways one can evaluate web sites for quality. They will be given some web sites to view and further their quest for knowledge about internet sources.
TASK:
The World Wide Web offers so much information and has made it easily accesible to retrieve this information. Therefore, this is why one must learn how to evaluate the good internet sources from the poor internet sources. There are many ways to distinguish the quality of web sites. Today you have a task to research some web sites that I have given you. The web sites contain information on what to look for in the quality of interenet resources. After you have looked over the information in the web sites I have provided, you will move on to the first task. Your first task is to brainstorm and use the web 2,0 tool called "Bubbl.us" to put your ideas together. You will then create a 1 page rough draft from the Bubbl.us and then let two peers look over your paper. Once you have completed task 1 you will move on to task 2 which is completing and pasting your paper into your blog discussing the ways you would evaluate a web site for quality. Your task must include the authenticity, authorship, and usability in the qualities you would look for.
You can start your journey into understanding what qualities to look for in a good internet source.
Good luck and I hope you will become informed through this assignment.
PROCESS:
Task #1 You will visit the internet sources I have provided below and investigate the multiple ways to evaluate web sites
Suggested Web Sites for Evaluating Information on the Internet:
http://olinuris.library.cornell.edu/ref/research/webcrit.html
http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Evaluate.html
http://www.lib.umd.edu/guides/webcheck.html
Task #2: After you have read the information on the web sites, you will take your ideas and create a bubbl.us diagram. This diagram outlines information that you want in your report. You will need to set up an account so you can save the file.
Task #3: Once the Bubbl.us is complete, you will type a 1 page rough draft based on the bubbl.us ideas. This document is double spaced with default margins.
Task #4: Creating the Final Draft
1. You will find 2 other students in the classroom to peer review your rough draft.
2. Once your peers have reviewed your rough draft, you will start writing your final paper.
3. Make sure you make the changes that were suggested by your peers.
4. You will copy your paper into your blog for discussion.
EVALUATION:
This is how your work will be evaluated.
Click the link below to go to the evaluation form. Your project must be evaluated by yourself, 2 other classmates, and the teacher. (Each person goes through the evaluation scoring separately.)
CONCLUSION:
Now that you have learned the multiple ways to evaluate information in web sites, you will be able to better choose internet sources for needed or wanted knowledge. You can take these new found facts and become very knowledgeable about the internet and its many web sites. You can also inform fellow students of the multiple ways to distinguish the accurate web sites from the inaccurate web sites. I hope this research will benefit you and encourage you to seek more information about the World Wide Web.
Have fun surfing on the web and be careful.
